April 2024 Update
The past 8 months have been a tremendous amount of work. We purchased approximately 2 acres in August of 2023. The goal was to create a wonderful you-pick experience for Shreveport and the surrounding areas. After a lot of planning, throwing out the plan and planning again, we will be opening on Saturday, May 18, 2024. We hope you will come visit and take home your very own Phillips Creek flowers.
Meet the Grower
Hi everyone! I’m Jack Phillips and I’m the Owner/Grower at Phillips Creek Farms. First, I have to let all of you know that this is possible only because of the support and encouragement of my family and friends. I’m so happy to have people in my life that tolerate my constant flower talk, but who also saw the reality of this vision I had.
Let me tell you a little about my background and why I have a passion for flowers. You could say farming and flowers are both in my blood. On both sides of my family, we had everything from small scale vegetable gardening, to large scale commercial farming. Also both of my grandmothers and my mother were avid flower gardeners. I have memories of stopping to dig up wildflowers on the side of the road, planting random “flower” seeds that may or may not have turned out to be vegetables, and cuttings rooting on Mamaw’s kitchen table. (Everyone always said she could put a dry stick in water and it would root. They weren’t far off.) The apple didn’t fall far from the tree. To this day I will still grow a weed to maturity just because I’m curious.
But why flower farming? I can’t say that I’ve always had an interest in flowers. I appreciated their beauty and I would put a plant in the dirt from time to time, but no one would have said I was a flower gardener. I might have been known more for killing plants than growing them… I certainly never imagined selling cut flowers could be a career.
Almost 3 years ago I decided to redo the front flower beds at my new house. It was a lot of work, but I was so proud when I was done. It was something I had done just for me and it was exactly what I wanted. I was really encouraged after finishing that project. Shortly after, I started working at Lifepath Hospice. We worked on projects there to bring flowers that we grew to patients and caregivers. The impact those blooms had on people was amazing and I was hooked. I started planting flowers that I could cut at my home. I started cutting from my front flower beds. Then it evolved to Phillips Creek Farms. In 2023 we could boast over 100′ of flower rows. It was amazing what could come out of such a small space.
I want to bring the joy I saw from those patients and caregivers to everyone! After seeing some “you-pick” operations on social media I thought “Wouldn’t it be nice to do that every day. It would be great if we had something like that in Shreveport.” Then it occurred to me that I could do it! I would have to start small, but there was no reason it wouldn’t work.
So here we go… My name is Jack, and I’m a Flower Farmer. I really hope you’ll make a visit to the flower field. I would love to talk about flowers with you!
